Regarding Very Unique from 12/18/06:

I agree very unique does not have a place in formal writing or speech. It has carved its own niche as an informal tool- as a piece of irony, disjointed statement, or oxymoron. It is a way of easing a comment for something that is quaint or foolish. The "very" can be conciliatory while letting the recipient know the bad news (that it is different or strange in a way that is not positive).

Deciding what the place of very unique is may require a proper definition. Unique is traditionally (since the 17th century) known to mean "one and only one" or singular. The traditional is the formal use. There is a non traditional use that appeared in the mid 19th century which gives it to also have a use as "special" or "noteworthy." This is a disputed though not irrefutable claim. If the word may be used as special it may be informally "very special." Not that this is a very appealing use... but also not incorrect.

"Oldest remaining building..." is just another way to say, "Oldest building". A building that no longer remains isn't a building any longer, right?

Wrong. 'Oldest building' can mean 'oldest building ever constructed'. Someone needs to stop over-analyzing things.

[...] There’s a good reason why I don’t jump on the bandwagon with my hard-earned cash. For example, I didn’t salivate during the Butterfly Marketing Craze and I’m glad I didn’t. Instead I picked up the manuscript when Mike Filsaime released it on it’s own - I was very happy with that purchase and with my earlier decision. [...]

It's no problem. That's what the blogosphere is about, isn't it? And I don't watch live TV at all, which opens your day up to hours of time - so sure I'm busy, but my schedule is less full at this point than you might think.

Not to mention that I always have time for nice folks such as yourself. Besides that your material is worth the read.

Hi Sabrina,

First thanks for the link.

Second, your blog is lovely. Simple, elegant and yu speak from the heart. Great thinkgs in a blog. This has to be the prettiest professional Wordpress blog I've ever seen.

Third, sales pages are a tricky thing. I suck at making them hypey. The thing is, if you just present the facts as they are without the *zazz*, you'd be surprised how much it affects your conversion rates. What I like to do is write out the reality, then hire a copy expert to make it sing, of course in a factual way.

Then again, sometimes even reality seems like hype if it's not presented correctly. I don't think most people intend to mislead anyone. They get excited about their product, and write what they know. It's a fine line to dance on... and that's speaking from both the client and creator side...

I liked your hacker post as well - there IS always a way.

I understand totally.

The sales letters for some of these internet marketing guys are regularly over the top. Some however are more moderate but still effective.

Methinks the reason some of them get away with it is because they have a large following and a measure of credibility with that following.

The sales page can be hypey and their following won't be terribly turned off.

In fact, it was the 'hypeyness' that turned me off the original product big-time.

In this case, the testimonials from other marketers that are not usually "hypey" made me think the product was worthy of my initial consideration. :-) Two in particular said the value for them when they bought the whole shebang, was primarily in the manuscript. One went as far to say that the manuscript was all he used to derive the phenomenal results he evenually got.

After plowing through it, I'd say anyone who's doing online marketing as a serious business should take advantage of the price while it's this low since he's preparing to raise it shortly.
